Athena 

           雅典娜 

   One time, Zeus has a bad headache．All the gods come. They are Apollo, the god of medicine, the god of the fire and so on. 

They try but have no way．Then, Zeus, the father of gods and all the gods ask the god of the fire to open his head．The god of the fire does this. To their surprise, a beautiful goddess comes out of Zeus' 

head．The goddess is giving off  light . She is Athena，the goddess of wisdom and knowledge． 

People build a city in Greece. It has no name. Athena wants to use her name. 

And Poseidon wants to use his name, too. So, there is a struggle between the goddess and Poseidon．

   Who can have the honour of naming it? All the people agree: who makes the most 

useful thing for the people, who will become the patron or the patroness of the city．Poseidon beats the ground with his trident and makes a horse. Athena maks an olive tree. 

It is peace and plenty. The horse is  struggle and sorrow. Athena, the goddess becomes 

the patroness of the city. The name of the city is Athens. 

   Athena is the goddess of arts and crafts, too. A woman, Arachne, challenges and talks 

big: she can beat Athena. The goddess is quite angry． 

   She becomes an old woman. She goes to Arachne and says, ' You must be modest,' 

But the  woman says,' Come on! Let's have a race.' Athena becomes the goddess again 

and says,' Let's go '. They,  the two women, start their race. 

   Arachne makes a net. Then,  Arachne sees the goddess' thing is better. She feels sad. 

She ties a piece of silk to hang herself．But Just before she dies, the goddess changes her into a spider and lets her weave 

forever. 

   From then on, Athena is the patroness of Athens, Greece.
