李嘉诚 作文
Learning English is not a one-day procedure; however, it takes sweat, hard work, and passion. It is definitely hard but also interesting for everyone to start a new language. Like what I said before, no one will skyrocket his English skills. In my opinion, English contains two different parts - writing and speaking. One who wants to succeed in English needs to have not only the ability to write but also the ability to speak. Therefore, to develop different parts of skills does something with different methods.
First of all, speaking is surely easy in comparison with writing. One thing you will notice is that no one speaks perfectly in real life when talking to a native speaker. In a sense, one who speaks imperfectly seems better than one who speaks flawlessly. There are also a lot of idioms and slang that will never appear on paper. For examples, everyone knows “kick the bucket”; as matter of fact it means to die, and the literal meaning really does not match it. In order to understand English language, we have to be familiar with idioms and slang. Having achieved the level of understanding, we also pay attention to being able to speak clearly. Communication involves both listening and talking, so understanding is not enough. There really are not too many things to talk about with speaking. The keys are to pronounce every vowels and consonance clearly and to stress on the correct syllables. Also, letting oral practice become daily routine is helpful.
The reason to put writing in a harder category is that most people don’t realize that writing is a process of hard-to-get-started introductions, messy drafts, and tedious revisions. Writing requires perfection in comparison with talking. Therefore, writing has to follow the certain rules, and slang and idioms are not permitted. The entire procedure of writing involves grammar and logic. The first step of writing is to figure out whether to use first, second, or third person; then, find out which tense to use. A paper usually contains introduction, body, and conclusion. To write a good paper, one also needs to understand each part and its content. When you have reached this step, revising, the most hated part, comes. Basically revising is to read the paper again or maybe multiple times and make paper to be coherent and logically correct. Since everyone is different and everyone’s mind set of word usage is also different, there are many different opinions the same paper. That is why writing is so hard that no one likes it.
All in all, the way to become better in English is to not only speak ‘defectively’ but also writes with perfection.
